It starts at 6.30pm at São Bento Station and ends at the Passeio das Virtudes viewpoint. This is a paid tour.

Please note that although the meeting points are always the same, the places where the tour ends can sometimes vary depending on the guide.

Is this tour suitable for people with limited mobility?

Yes, our guides can adapt the tour, for example by slowing down the pace. However, you should bear in mind that the entire tour is on foot and can be tiring for some people.

Some useful tips: on hot, sunny days, take a cap or hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a bottle of water and fresh clothes. Since the route is all on foot, you'll be exposed to sunlight most of the time. Getting a tan is always desirable, but let's try to avoid sunburn! Wearing comfortable shoes is also something you should take into consideration. You could opt for sneakers suitable for hiking, for example.

The guide/tour expert will be properly identified with Living Tours red (umbrella, shirt or jacket), next to the sign with the word Tour, like the one in the picture.

Some of the Sites and Monuments on the itineraries

Palace of Justice or Porto Court of Appeal

You'll find out some caricature facts about this building during the Estado Novo period (Portugal's dictatorial political regime for most of the 20th century), as well as other curiosities. Here you'll find a famous statue of Justice that will surprise you.

Cordoaria Garden

Very close by, after crossing the street, you'll come across a green space full of trees. This is the Cordoaria Garden. Some university activities take place here. Due to its proximity to Saint Anthony Hospital, the trees in the garden were said to "absorb" patients' illnesses. One of the many myths and stories you can learn about this beautiful place.

Photography Museum

A few steps further and you'll be facing the Photography Museum, a building that once served as a prison, the Cadeia da Relação. This space contains a large part of Porto's photographic heritage. The statue there is called Amores de Camilo, which features the Portuguese writer Camilo Castelo Branco. It's worth hearing a little about the bohemian lifestyle, the romantic life and the tragic end of one of the great novelists of the 19th century.

Clérigos Church and Tower

At this stage of your visit, you'll stop to appreciate one of Porto's most iconic monuments. The architectural complex of the Clérigos Church and Tower was built in the 18th century and is in the Baroque style. It is seen as one of the city's postcards and is therefore a must-see. If you want to enter the Clérigos Tower, you can do so outside of this tour. Buy your ticket here.

Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto

One of Porto's main centers of knowledge couldn't be left out of the itinerary: the Museum of Natural History and Science at the University of Porto. This space aims to promote the dissemination of knowledge about evolution, diversity and the convergence between the natural and cultural worlds.

Lello Bookshop

Are you a fan of the Harry Potter films? Then you'll like this next stop. The Lello Bookshop, considered the most beautiful in the world, was the inspiration for the Harry Potter books (or so they say). You won't want to miss the chance to see this building with its neo-Gothic decor, stunning stained glass windows, famous staircases and shelves full of interesting books. Entrance to the library is not included in this tour, but if you want to visit it before or after, buy your ticket here.

Gomes Teixeira Square (Lions Square)

Right next to Livraria Lello, you'll see a large square with a fountain in the center. The Gomes Teixeira Square, or Lions Square as it is popularly known, has changed its name several times and is home to the Fountain of the Lions and the Rectory building of the University of Porto.

Church of Carmo and Church of the Carmelitas

At the next stop, you'll see two churches seemingly glued together, but that's not quite the case. Separating the Church of Carmo and the Church of the Carmelitas is a tiny house! Would you like to know the funny story behind the churches? Come on a Free Walking Tour with us!

GNR - Porto Territorial Command (Quartel do Carmo)

The Quartel do Carmo occupy the former Convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, belonging to the Discalced Carmelite Order.  After the extinction of the religious orders in Portugal, this was the headquarters of the Porto Municipal Guard, which was eventually renamed the National Republican Guard (GNR). It is made up of a series of buildings with imposing architecture, curious details and a rich heritage. It is also a symbol of authority and protection, reflecting the GNR's ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of citizens.

Saint Anthony Hospital

This structure, classified as a National Monument, is in the neoclassical style. Its simple decoration includes a few sculptures, urns and classical architectural elements. It is an impressive building that has continued to function as a hospital since the 19th century.
